More than 250 people came together at Leeds Playhouse on 4 March for its fifth annual Open Iftar, marking a powerful celebration of community, connection and shared understanding during the holy month of Ramadan.
The evening brought together families, students, community groups and Playhouse staff and audiences for a warm and inclusive gathering which included facepainting, henna, children’s crafts and storytelling with readings of Zanib Mian’s children’s book Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet which also coincided with World Book Day and the Playhouse’s new production.
In the spirit of generosity that lies at the heart of Ramadan, attendees were invited to bring a dish to contribute to a shared buffet. The Playhouse also provided food with support from Aagrah and First Bus who provided a selection of hot food for people to enjoy.
Lily Craig, Interim Director of Playhouse Connect said: “Our Open Iftar is one of the most special moments in our year. Seeing more than 250 people from across Leeds come together to share food, conversation and community was incredibly moving. It reflects everything we want the Playhouse to stand for – a welcoming space where everyone belongs.”
Naeem Aslam, Director of Aagrah Leeds, said: “At Aagrah Leeds, we strongly believe in supporting initiatives that bring communities together. The Open Iftar at the Playhouse was a successful example of this and we look forward to continuing our support for Leeds Playhouse and the positive impact they make across Leeds.”
Mubs Mahmed, Community and Social Value Partner at First Bus, said: “This event allowed us to build on the work we are already doing with the Playhouse in providing travel support for a year to encourage participation in its Theatre of Sanctuary activities.
“The Open Iftar brought people together for a shared experience and we were delighted to help make it a great occasion.”
