We are delighted to be partnering with Soho Theatre to host a free workshop for writers to find out how to submit their play to the Verity Bargate Award. Launched in 1982, it is one of the longest-established awards for playwrights in the UK.

Verity Bargate, co-founder of Soho Theatre, passionately championed new writing during her time at the small but hugely influential fringe theatre company, Soho Poly.

This session gives participants the opportunity to find out more about:

  • the award
  • Soho Theatre’s current programmes, theatre spaces and distinctive approach to storytelling and theatricality
  • techniques used by playwrights to captivate audiences

The award is for everyone. First-time writers, late starters, people who’ve been sitting on an idea for years – the only thing that matters is that you’ve written a great play.

Submissions for the 2026 Award, which is for writers in the UK and Ireland, open on Monday 12 January and close on Monday 13 April.
