Turn up the drama in your wardrobe with one-of-a-kind costumes from our first-ever Costume Sale.
23 May 2025
Leeds Playhouse is throwing open its wardrobe doors on Saturday 28 June to give everyone an amazing opportunity to bag a piece of theatrical history.
From kimonos, wedding dresses and evening gowns to coats, military uniforms and even a worm costume and a polar bear head, this incredible free event offers a treasure trove of theatrical must-haves.
Buyers can browse the rails of much-loved productions, including White Christmas, The Wizard of Oz, Into The Woods, My Fair Lady and Alice in Wonderland. Many of the items on sale have been created by the incredible craftspeople in the Playhouse’s Costume team, with support from talented freelance makers. Working closely together they create inspiring pieces seen on stage by thousands of people every year.
Victoria Marzetti, Head of Costume at Leeds Playhouse, said: “Behind every costume seen on stage lies an extraordinary amount of intricate craftsmanship – hours of sewing, ironing, steaming, pleating, and embellishing, all brought together by a dedicated team to create a vivid final picture. Costumes are more than fabric; they are expressions of character, emotion, and identity. In a single glance, they can reveal a person’s place in society or stir a powerful memory.
“It’s a true privilege to be part of the talented team here at the Playhouse, where for over 55 years, we’ve been bringing stories to life through costume. Our costume sale not only celebrates this legacy but also reflects our commitment to sustainability, encouraging people to reuse, reshape, and repurpose these beautifully crafted pieces, giving them new life and meaning.
“It’s wonderful to know that these costumes will continue their journey, finding new homes and new stories to tell. For some, they’ll spark memories of a cherished performance; for others, they’ll be a chance to own a piece of Playhouse history. Whatever the reason, we invite everyone to explore and discover the hidden gems waiting to be found.”
The sale is being held from 9.30am-5.30pm on Saturday 28 June in Leeds Playhouse’s Barber Studio, which can be accessed through a bespoke entrance opposite Leeds Bus Station. Items will be priced from as little as £1. Entry is free but pre-registration is recommended through the Playhouse website. Entry is on a first come-first served basis only and a queuing system will be in place external to the building. All funds raised through the Costume Sale will help Leeds Playhouse, a registered charity, continue its work producing world class theatre, creating safe and welcoming spaces, and nurturing artists at every stage of their careers.
